WELLESLEY RUNNERS CHARITY SCAVENGER HUNT
2nd Division War Memorial (Hospital Hill)
“You stand where bravery is carved into stone, a reminder of soldiers who stood tall. From this commanding viewpoint, the echoes of history are strong.
Now, leave the high ground and head to the water. Seek a lock upon the canal where barges once queued, and the gates still hold the flow of the Basingstoke canal.”
more about…
The 2nd Division was formed by Sir Arthur Wellesley (later to become the Duke of Wellington) in 1809 for service in the Peninsular War. It was one of the first British formations to move to France in 1914, commanded by Major-General CC Monroe, as part of the British Expeditionary Force Infantry Corps, and remained on the Western Front for most of the war. The Division took part in many battles, amongst which were the Battle of Mons, the First Battle of Ypres, the Battle of Loos and several phases of the Battle of the Somme.
The memorial was erected in 1923, designed by Captain Scott.
